The South Australia Weatherill Labor government has decided to cut the Greek Language Maintenance and Development Program, which had been part of the curriculum in 16 schools across the area.

The program offered a way for children of the Greek diaspora to get acquainted with the Greek language, improve their skills and develop cultural awareness regarding their roots. It had been a successful part of the South Australian education system for almost ten years, leaving the Greek-Australian community in shock to hear that it was being cut.

“This was a program that gave students the opportunity to celebrate their cultural diversity and learn more about the origins of their relatives. It is not acceptable for the government to sideline one ethnic community in favour of others,” said Shadow Education Minister David Pisoni, according to the Diaspora newspaper Neos Kosmos.

“The Greek community deserves an explanation from Premier Jay Weatherill as to why the government has taken this drastic step and why it didn’t consult with the community beforehand,” he added.
