Moras_VangelisGreek football player Vangelis Moras has moved thousands of people in Greece and Australia when he decided to donate bone marrow to save his ill brother.

Moras, player of the Greek national team and Italian team Hellas Verona, will travel from Italy to Melbourne on August 2 to donate bone marrow for a transplant that will help his younger brother, Dimitri, recover.

Dimitri is being hospitalised in Australia since March, after finding out he had high-risk Acute Myeloid Leukemia while on holiday. He has been undergoing chemotherapy at the Alfred Hospital and he cannot return to Greece as he is in critical condition.

His whole family is now in Melbourne to support him. Dimitri’s story has touched the Greek community of Melbourne. In June, 250 members of the Greek community raised 20,000 dollars, while the “Save Moras” campaign has raised more than 100,000 dollars, paying for his first round of chemotherapy and his hospital stay. The campaign aims to raise 250,000 dollars.

The football player also visited the Oakleigh Grammar and thanked the Oakleigh community who have helped and supported his brother. The Greek Australian students excited by the player’s visit were asking for photos and a hug.

The adventure of Dimitri has reached international fame. The well-known Greek singer, Antonis Remos visited Dimitris in the hospital.
