Christos Tsiolkas, a Greek-Australian writer who was born in Melbourne was invited to speak and participate in this year’s Sydney Writer’s Festival. Tsiolkas’ work is well-known around the world, especially for the way in which he writes about subjects such as sex, drugs and violence.
In a recent interview with the British newspaper “The Guardian” Tsiolkas spoke of his work and the ways of his immigrant family, the way he was brought up and the values that his parents passed on to him. He also mentioned the fact that his parents couldn’t speak English very well, was one of the reasons he decided to get into writing.
Speaking of his family the author said: “While I couldn’t live by my parents’ codes, I would never turn away from them because my life – which they don’t understand or approve of – was nevertheless made possible by their sacrifice.”
At the end of the interview, Tsiolkas mentioned that he is working on a new book which will be quite different compared to his previous work. In fact, he said that he was going to write about the life of St. Paul.
