The policy of Australia concerning the issue of the naming of FYROM will remain as such if the Liberal-National Coalition wins the elections.
Tony Abbott, Leader of the Opposition, stated his commitment during a press conference he gave on July 11 in Melbourne.
While answering a journalist’s question from the FYROM Diaspora press, he said that a government of his “would never acknowledge the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia with its constitutional name.”
“I am not proposing a change to the current situation,” Abbott said. “While I can fully understand how passionate Australians of Greek or of Balkan heritage feel on these issues, I fully understand that… I certainly think it’s important for Australia to play an appropriate part in the resolution of all of these international disputes,” he pointed out.
The Coalition leader referred to Australia’s multiculturalism and diversity, “Modern Australia is a country of diversity and I’m very proud of that diversity.”
