A Catholic church, south of Adelaide, was made available to the Greek Orthodox community for the Easter period after its own church was destroyed in a fire.

The touching gesture by the Catholic Church follows the devastating fire at St Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church at Glenelg North, which has been serving the community since 1981.

Parishioners have been left distraught, with the blaze coming on Holy Week, meaning the church would be unable to open for traditional services.

However, Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church was offered for the Greek Orthodox liturgies of Holy Thursday, Holy Friday and Holy Saturday.

Father Peter Fotakis of St Panteleimon Greek Orthodox Church at Glenelg North thanked the Catholic Church for the kind gesture.

“It is a touching gesture that shows compassion and love. We found support that we did not expect,” Father Fotakis was quoted as saying.

“With the help of God we will rebuild our church but now I would like to thank the Catholic Church for its kind contribution that will help us to perform the Holy Week services here,” he added.
